EAST MIDLANDS
The East Midlands region in this guide comprises the counties of Nottinghamshire,
Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire and Rutland.
The
East Midlands region is very diverse, from the hills and moors of the
Derbyshire Peak district in the West to the flat Fen areas of parts of
Lincolnshire. Nottinghamshire is famous for its once busy coalfields but
now more famous for the shopping and night life in Nottingham known as
'The Queen of the Midlands'. There are however some quiet and beautiful
places in this county. To the south is Leicestershire, once famous for
its hosiery and shoe industry. Leicester is a vibrant, industrial city.
Leicestershire is now at the centre of the National Forest project. The
small county of Rutland contains some pretty scenery, particularly around
Rutland Water.
On
