Dining Pubs in BUXTON
At 1007 ft, Buxton is one of the highest towns in England and with its position in the Peak District is a popular tourist destination. It is surrounded by higher hills. The town is famous as a spa town and was established by the 5th Duke at the end of the 18th century. In earlier times - Mary Queen of Scots visited Buxton 4 times around 1580 to Buxton to relieve her chronic rheumatism and neuralgia. The town has a beautiful Crescent built to rival Bath. The Devonshire Royal Hospital opened in 1859 is claimed to have the widest dome in the world - 156 ft in diameter. The Pavillion at Buxton is a centre for concerts and drama. Buxton's springs have been known from at least Roman times and have a temerature of 28 degrees Centigrade. They contain minerals as well as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Buxton water is pleasant to drink (unlike most other spa waters) and Buxton Water is sold in supermakets together with other bottled waters. Buxton has its own well dressing in July. Poole's Cavern and lovely woodland walks are nearby.
