Wonderful pub, great location and very friendly owners. Steak and Ale pie fantastic followed by Bread and Butter pudding. Home made and we'll be back.

Second visit, this time on a Sunday. Food suffered from being busy.
I think they try to do toomuch with limited resources. Keep it simple!

I visited there today. the 2 rabbits in cages outside had no water. When I topped a bottle up they were so parched they fought to drink, so I watered the second one by hand. I handed my glasses in and told the bar staff, who seemed indifferent. What a disgrace. Next time I am going to the RSPCA. Dont go here, they cant look after animals let alone customers. I have never seen in all my life, animals drink like that.

I cant believe some of the recent negative comments. They dont sound like the Pub I went to. I was there this week, after a long walk. It was a cold and wet night. Lou., the Landlady and her family couldnt have been nicer. Her husband cooked me a delicious, reasonably priced meal while I sat in front of a log fire chatting to Lou. I would definately go back there again and would thoroughly recommend it.

After a very cold but really enjoyable walk, ten of us had a really good meal. The food was great as was the atmosphere and the landlady made us so welcome. Will definitely be back.

TERRIBLE..TERRIBLE...TERRIBLE
Dining with 4 friends on a Sunday afternoon. Food very mediocre, small portion sizes and hideously overpriced. Service was the worst ever experienced... hostess unprofessional rude and patronising. I would never recommend this pub to anyone. In summary, don't bother... overpriced mediocre food and appaling service.

Eight hungry walkers visited on the evening of 22 June. Disappointing - limited and overpriced menu. Discarded starters on cost alone. Majority had roasts of the day at £14, (and suspect not freshly cooked) Pie at £15; both with very mean portion of vegetables. Extra veg would cost!! Puds excellent. Climax of visit was one of the party being accused by the hostess of lying. Could not recommend.

Waited 90 minutes after the time we were booked and 30 minutes for our drinks order.Obviously out of their depth. Food was OK but expensive for what it was and vegetable portions were very niggardly.Won't rush back.

Just returned after a great walk and a super lunch with a group of friends. We will be repeating this. Excellent.

Excellent hosts. We were made to feel really welcome. Super open fire in the bar area and excellent food and views. Could not ask for more.

Myself and a friend enjoyed a very pleasant visit and found the staff extremely helpful and pleasant. The management are very obviously doing their best and getting it right.

I live in sussex and visit friends in Macclesfield at least once a year. I allways visit the pub everytime i'm up, for a meal or a drink. And found the hanging gate to be excellent on all counts

I was delighted to be able to celebrate my 21st Birthday here with my family and the pub was more than accommodating for our party of 18 including toddlers and babies. The pub is in an amazing location with first class views of the countryside and an ideal location to go for a stroll and the top class food. There was a wide variety of home made food which was to the highest standard I have experienced and I would defiantly recommend to anyone who wants a warm welcoming feel, with great food, local fish and a wide variety of drinks; if these do not appeal then go purely for the view. Thanks for a fantastic birthday, Sam Munnings – January 2008

Excellent food and service. We were very well looked after and would recommend the Hanging Gate to everyone. There is a very small snug bar which can make access a bit difficult if it were busy, but we had no problems

Excellent food and very friendly staff. Wonderful view!

We arrive on a cold blustery Sunday at 5pm unaware that food weren't served until 7pm. It wasn't a problem though as the staff couldn't have been too keen to help. The chef rustled us up a lamb Sunday roast even though he had just sat down to have his dinner! Would fully recommend to anyone.
12:27 28/05/07
The service is TERRIBLE. My partner could not sit down for minutes when we arrived, as the restaurant manager blocked the way to our able as she chatted to someone else. No apology and no explanation.
We also asked for coffees which never arrived, and stood like lemons at the bar waiting to pay and were ignored by three members of staff for at least ten minutes. It's a shame, as the food is really good, but the attitude of the staff and service is the worst I've ever experienced. Go somewhere else!

Booked for 22 people in the restaurant.Over an hour before food served and then came one plate at a time. Vegetables arrived after main course eaten! Despite writing to Mr and Mrs Rothenbury, we have not had a reply and are very disappointed.

TERRRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SERVICE. Booked us for Sunday Lunch at 2PM. Told us that table would not be available until 2:30. At 2:30 there was chaos with a bar full of people waiting. Owner and waitresses unhelpful and uncariung. We left. DON'T GO HERE.
