Always excellent quality and value for money
Excellent food you pay for what you get. Superb service. Anyone who complained on the other reviews visited a different pub to us. I got told they never have to advertise. Faultless, fine detail with veg is good too. Will be back. Only one other in Herts rivals this one The Wellington in Old Welwyn & we have tried them all. Well done the Bull. Tom is a character too.
I have no idea if the 2 moans on here are genuine, I woudl say they are people promoting their own pubs! I moved to Cottered 18 months ago and have eaten several times in The Bull and everytime the food has been fantastic. Yes it is not cheap, but it is excellent. I have tried several restaurants and pubs in te area since moving and this one is by far the best. Easily an equal for The Tilbury in Datchworth
Gem of a pub. Since moving to the area a few years ago, we go often and have always found all the staff to be friendly and welcoming.
Nothing is too much trouble even when we frequently request dishes not on the menu.
Go! I am sure you will agree with me!!
Very poor service. Good quality food - but only if they cook it the way you requested, as there seems a tendency for the chef to cook as he sees fit and then for the staff to ignore you when the meal is delivered - and do not dare to complain whatever you do !
Ignored for 3-4 minutes upon arrival and left to jockey between the doorway and a sandwich board placed right in front of the bar area. Once the invisible cloak was removed we were rapidly seated at a large table, along with a huge platter of cheese - not ideal if you have a cheese allergy. Also - every 3rd item on the menu & specials seems to contain cheese.
After a great crab starter, I was served a fillet steak that was requested medium, and arrived very rare. I tried to flag the waitress' attention but the staff were too busy chatting to each other behind the bar and completely ignored us throughout the main course. I ate 70% of my rare steak and decided I couldn't eat any more, especially since the small amount of sauce had diminished to nothing.
When I complained about the lack of service both upon arrival and during the main course - the (new) waitress took a formidable stance at the end of the table and simply said "Well whatever I say you just wont be happy will you". This took my breath away and instead of it being just a comment on the service completely ruined the meal - after which we just wanted to pay and leave. She did return later, and offered a free coffee or dessert, but at this point all appetite was lost and a rapid departure from this incredibly rude establishment was sought. She then returned to her colleagues growling that the customer was beyond making happy - which absolutely wouldn't have been the case had our initial complaint been handled sensitively and courteously instead of the hostile, aggressive attitude we received.
One to avoid - go the The Fox in Willian instead - much nicer, friendlier and still has atmosphere after 9pm !
Lovely friendly welcome. Not the cheapest, but definitely worth the money. Very clean, open fires. Homemade puddings to die for!
I visited this pub today for lunch, Sunday, for the first time with my girlfriend. She had a Beef Sunday Roast at £15.95 and I had a Steak & Wine Pie at £9.95. I have been fortunate enough to eat in many different pubs and restaurants in my life and I have to say that this pub/restaurant ranks very low indeed. Let's be fair if a pub is charging £15.95 for a simple Beef Sunday Roast it should be something a little bit special and fullsome - it was neither. As for my Steak & Wine Pie well it was small, runny and just very bland; they served it with some small new potatoes and that was it! I would suggest that most of the other reviewers on htis page need to try some other places. If I had been charged 50% of the actual charge that would have been more realistic but it still wouldn't have made us return. Anyone reading this who would like to a much better option in this area then I would recommned the Three Horseshoes just outside Stevenage, much better food and definitely much better value for money.
Not your normal pub grub, far superiour, never been disappointed & always return. Top food faultless.Michael Winner wrote a good review apparently. We really like this pub, despite trying elsewhere always return here. Worth booking however at busy times
Great food & service - would recommend the landlord's spotted dick.
We must have visited on a very off day because the risotto was terrible and salads just a joke. It seems as though the pub is clinging to a reputation perhaps earned some while ago
We have eaten at the bull on many occasions and have always had excellent food and service.
6 of us had a delicious meal there yesterday - everything was well prepared and hot on arrival at the table. Fabulous selection of dishes. Well worth the visit.
Excellent food, good quality and quantities, friendly atmosphere and a staff who are always welcoming and jolly.
Excellent food and friendly service. Top food in a little known area. It is about time this pub was put on the map.
Excellent quality food from a largish & varied menu and at reasonable prices. The service is friendly and efficient and better than many resaurants. This is the best place to eat out in the area that we have been to.
Fantastic food! Great fresh seafood selection. The menu is so varied from sandwiches to full meals - something for everyone. This is the best place we have discovered to eat locally - we have tried most. The food is always fresh and the puddings are homemade and YUMMY! Service is always friendly and efficient.
Excellent Pub, extensive menu for both snacks and full meals, service was very efficient and prices very reasonable
This is better than your normal pub grub. A varied menu very fresh veg and a lot of attention to detail. You can get sausage and chips/homemade burgers at a reasonable price. If you want something more it is available. You would never get such a good meal in a lot of places around this area/london. Booking is advisable.
Very good quality food in a friendly atmosphere. The ploughman's are excellent and very good value.
Fresh well prepared food and well looked after beer, poor wine list though. Sandwiches are superb made with doorsyteps of fresh granary bread with varied fillings. Larger meals are excellent but charged at restaurant prices, typically £20 - £30 for three courses and drinks.
