The Miners Standard Inn at Winster is a basic country pub with interesting history. Good value food and a separate dining area and well kept real ales. There are good view and camping adjacent to the pub. The Miners Standard, Winster was originally built as a farmhouse in 1653. In 1753 with increased traffic from the turnpike road, it was converted to an inn. The inn is reputed to be haunted with at least two ghosts! The inhabitants of Winster were extensively engaged in mining operations. There were several levels, of which the Portway mine was the greatest, which drains several mines in its course of three miles to the Derwent. The name the Miner's Standard is derived from the dish used for the measurement of ore. These dishes were originally around 16 pints capacity.
