Enjoyed very good light lunches at The Devonshire Arms a couple of days ago. Cannot understand low ratings for this classy eating place. Good selection of cask ales ,too.

Went last night - London prices but food incredible poor. Greasy sirloin steak with old potatos masquarading as chips for £19.00!! When bad potatos were pointed out I was told the potatos were fresh but they had a 'vein' running though them - it was green!!! Awful thai style fishcakes also. I don't mind never minded payng a for good food but this was a joke! Menu was pretentious and undeliverable.

Very disappointing. The restaurant was cold, the food average, service very slow, portions very stingy. When we left we were still hungry! Staff poorly informed about the menu. We won't be returning. Main course & soft drink for 2 of us, £40 - not worth the money.

Just spent a very enjoyable night in the pub having a beautiful meal and then in one of the newly renovated bedrooms.I loved the decor although it is very brave and I'm sure not traditional enough for everyones taste. The breakfast was first class and I would not hesitate to recommend it thouroughly.

I'm surprised at the poor comments regaring this pub. However, after a
lovely lunch and a nice chat to the new manager, I know that the pub has
recently been given a new lease of life with a whole new team both in the
kitchen and front of house. I can only assume that the previously bad
experiences listed here were under the former propriotor? They in no way
reflect our meal 2 days ago....as I understand it the refurbishment work in
the Bar is nearly complete and, although scaffolding still exists, maybe we
were lucky in that it was a Sunday when we went and no-one was working!
However, the new brassarie area is a very pleasant environment to eat in,
and the food was delicious. Not your normal pub grub. If you get chatting
to the Restaurant Manager, he is very helpful in explaining the what it's taken to get it the place to the standards he requires. Obviously, this is a very public trial period and, although no excuse, makes you feel
better knowing that they are actually taking an interest in making this
place a reputable establishment. All I could see was hard work, care and
attention. I hope that visitors give it a chance and that it gets the
success it deserves. The food is delicious and the atmosphere just what you'd expect from a country pub.

Very disappointing experience: the food was very expensive; in a party of four two steaks were poorly cooked and cold; workmen renovating the inn hammered and drilled throughout out meal. The manager seemed non plussed by our complaint and made no offer of apology. We will not be visiting again.

Fantastic food and friendly staff made our visit to the Devonshire Arms delightful. The staff were friendly and attentive without being pushy, the service was first class and all three courses were delicious and filling. I'd heartily reccomend a visit.

Having booked a table at this inn earlier in the day, My wife and I were extremely disappointed and annoyed to be treated so badly. On arrival we bought some drinks and the older gentleman who served us,informed us our table was round the corner - up some stairs. We weren't offered menus and bought the most expensive drinks we had had in over 12 pubs in the area. We waited over 30 minutes, whilst other people arrived and left, and were totally ignored by at least 4 staff, one of whom, the gentlemen who originally served our drinks, actually lent over me to put back empty glasses on the bar. Needless to say, we finished our extremly poor quality Black Sheep beer, paid and then left. We have never been treated like this anywhere in the Country and I would like these comments to be read by all, as a warning.

Thoroughly enjoyed the two visits here. Our meals were most appetising , with scrumptuous puddings!!
The staff were friendly and attentive, even although very busy. We would recommend this homely establishment.

Very disappointing. Quality of food was'nt even average. The attitude of the staff, especially the gentleman behind the bar, left a lot to be desired. First visit & last visit. Dont be put off there ARE some great places to eat in Derbyshire!

I've been going to the Devonshire on an occasional basis for around 30 years. It used to be very quaint and reasonably priced. In recent years it has been the victim of its own success with coachloads packing it throughout much of the year. Consequently prices have crept up and individual attention has fallen badly. Maybe one day it will lose its popularity and return to the fine country pub it used to be. Some hopes.

Just returned after a days walking around Chatsworth and spent a very enjoyable lunch at the Devonshire. Excellent pub food ( lovely menu), not cheap, but very good quality. Excellent beers too, Black Sheep ( inc Special) and Theakstons OP). Service was very good and unobtrusive - just a great lunch enjoying good food, good beer, good surroundings and good company. Tip - book ahead - it got busy and it was nice to arrrive at a table with your name on it

This is a great place for good food, good ales and a unhurried ambience. Yes the landlord can appear to be surley, curt or frosty, but really its just his quirky manner - he and his staff are really very helpful and very knowledgeable about what's in the food and what it all tastes like etc. and we found them very courteous too, nothing too much trouble for them. Its a place where you feel unhurried and want to spend an afternoon lounging around by one of the open fires of cold winter's afternoon or while away a few hours sitting outside soaking up the atmosphere of a lovely old village in the summer. My only criticism would be that the far end restaurant's decor is boring and doesn't fit with the rest of the establishment.

We did not feel welcome in this pub as the landlord totally ignored us even turning his back on us at the bar . I had to say excuse me can we order a drink and this was nothing special half a lager and a pint of bitter for £4.20. Every table had a reserved ticket on it but no one else in the pub. We now know why everyone was sitting outside on the walls. I asked if we could have a seat as my husband is disabled and he just pointed and said the third table in their. I love to sit and people watch and I must say that his lovely attitude was also mirrored by his staff who were more interested in chatting to each other than the customers and any enquiries were dealt with very curtly with no interest in the customer whatsoever. Some people came in and enquired about the puddings/sweets they had on display you would of thought that they were not for sale or certainly didnt want to sell them by the way they were dealt with. Now I was in the the Star in Tideswell and what a very different scene we walked in and the landolord said hello and what can I get for you we felt welcome and our custom valued as soon as we walked through the door we ordered food and drink half a lager and a pint of bitter £2.17 ! Food was excellant and plenty of it . They waiting on staff were very friendly , pleasant and attentive. When we had finished and paid we told him our story about how unwelcome we felt in the Devonshire arms only for someone sitting behind us to say they were in their last week and they were dealt with exactly the same. Anyway Mr Frosty of Beely you are doing yourself no favours and will certainly not get repeat business.

12 of us had a small reception here. Really well looked after and the food was good and excellent value for money. Would certainly recommend - especially the black sheep bitter.

Rather disappointed with the service and the quantity of food. Fancy menu of presumable frozen prepared, tastless food.

Really great place. The Sunday Victorian Brunch menu is fabulous.
