One of the best meals I've had for a long time. Real ale, friendly staff, and live music, what more could you want?

Barrel Inn
Review by Chele O’Neill (visited 4th to 8th September 2009).

Looks like this place is still contagious after all these years, as during our stay in the excellent 5 star B&B next door ( Bretton Cottage) we ate here 3 out of 4 evenings.

Although it’s set in the middle of nowhere, the highest pub in the Peaks and dating from at least the 13thC - with this current Inn from 1596, it receives steady passing trade; those from the nearby campsite and youth hostel plus clearly the various regular visitors.
This is testament to the superb ambience on offer regardless of the time of day, or night even, in our case.
The staff are highly trained without veering down the path of servitude, an excellent balance in my opinion.

On our first night, which had been pre-booked, we ordered Sardines (£5.40) which although fiddly, as sardines are, were fresh and well presented as was my partners Prawn Cocktail (£5.95). Once we saw the size of the dishes being dispensed, we opted for a further starter, rather than 2 mains, Arbroath Smoked Salmon Fishcakes (£5.60) which were equally tasty.
For a main we chose a dish to share, Lamb chops (£14.95), which were excellent, succulent and quite simply the freshest and tastiest we’ve ever eaten, accompanied by the standard veg and home coked, chunky chips.

As there was no driving involved due to our nearby B&B location, we quaffed a decent bottle of Pinot Grigiot (£16.00) several Courvoisiers (£2.05) a Balvenie (£3.00) and a bottle of Budweiser (£2.85).

Plenty of cask ales and a whole array of spirits including a fair range of wines, ensures you won’t go thirsty at this hostelry.

Further nights saw the waist band swelter as we ate Fillet Beef Wellington (£16.95) which melted in the mouth at first contact and the most delightful Stilton and Brocolli soup ( £4.20). The only minor disappointment was the desert, Crème Brullee (£4.95) with Irish Cream, it was served straight from the fridge, and the only Fenian relationship to it seemed to have gone by the wayside along with my ancestors many years ago.

The panoramic views outside are enough to make the smoking ban seem like a bonus!.

A truly memorable experience, here’s to the next 500 years.

This is on route of one of my favourite walks, it is at the end of a long climb. To collapse in here with a beer and enjoy some excellent food, just heaven!
